Der Rote Faden, 2014 – Frankfurt / Darya von Berner⁣

Der Rote Faden (the red line) is a German phrase (Goethe „Elective Affinities“) that refers to a track, a path or a guideline. A Roter Faden connects distant things that belong together.⁣
⁣
The building in Saalgasse 18, Frankfurt, by architect Charles Moore and Norbert Moest, is an example of an emotional and pluralistic post-modern architecture. The two houses are in reality just one. A red light tape joins the two seemingly different house-halves and repeats in it’s movement the circular elements of the architecture.⁣

An art installation at the Moriarty gallery in Madrid with the collaboration of the poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti known for his poems inspired by the New York subway, and the underground company of Metro de Madrid, that installed generously an access control turnstile at the entrance of the gallery.⁣

For this installation, the basic architectural structure of the exhibition space, was redrawn with the help of a new lighting technology (Light Tape). The title of the exhibition was inspired by the work of Immanuel Kant (1786) ‘What does it mean to orient oneself in thinking?’⁣

breathe( )red redraws – from sunset to midnight – the architectural structure of the pavilion with artificial light. Darya von Berner thus transforms the completely transparent pavilion into a floating mirroring object. Harry de Wit composed a soundtrack that interacts with the travelling of light coming from the inside of the pavilion. His sound waves originate in the trees that surround the pavilion and are sent from the trees to the glass panels of the pavilion, which then resonate with them.⁣

La nube de la Puerta Alcalá, was a temporary site–specific intervention in a public space of Madrid. It was created for the Noche en Blanco´07 (Madrid) and consisted of a real cloud, which was installed in front of the historic monument ‘Puerta de Alcalá’. The cloud was created with the help of a new nebulisation technology and consisted of nothing else but pulverised water particles suspended in mid-air. The installation offered almost a million visitors the possibility, to experience a natural phenomenon in the heart of the city.⁣

For the occasion of ‘Cordoba, European Cultural Capital 2016’, four different artists were invited to create a public intervention each. Every artist represented a different element: air (Darya von Berner), fire (José María Soler), water (Jeppe Hein) and earth (Miquel Barceló and the dancer Josef Nadj).⁣

The photographic series ‘Inversiones’, documents the imposing buildings of Frankfurt’s financial district. They are represented, tilted on their head, in a symbolical attempt, to shake the truth out of them.
Von Berner began this work in 2002, the same year in which the Euro was introduced as the single currency, only ten years after the Maastricht treaty was signed. In 2003, the record year of mortgage loans in Spain, the photo ‘S.O, Banco Bilbao Vizcaya’ was created.

L’Oiseau dans l’espace, or Not, is a replica of the original, wrapped in crocheted recycled plastic.

L’Oiseau dans l’espace, is a series of sculptures by Constantin Brancusi. In 1927 it became the centre of a heated legal debate, redefining the meaning of art. The lawyers had to decide whether it was an ‘original sculpture’ or a metal article. It was not clear whether the ‘Bird’ could be called art, because it looked like nothing anyone had ever seen before.

The analogue photographs, of two shampoo bottles in the shape of two Barbie dolls, wandering solemnly indifferent in distinct environments, like an airport, a mud field, or a greenhouse grove, belong to the Flusser series, which is dedicated to the philosopher Vilém Flusser (1920-1991). Behind these seemingly banal scenarios, hides a thematic tension, which is enhanced by their large format.

The fiction of the world we live in becomes apparent in this consumer product, which doesn’t merely show a picture on its label, but the whole bottle has the shape of the blond doll. The magical image of the container triumphs over the actual product, the shampoo is hidden behind the artificiality of the packaging.
Fictitious images are models of behaviour, regardless whether they are showing something real or not. The distinction between fake, real or artificial, does not exist in this case. They are solidified abstractions, by means of calculation. This is the reality/fiction we live in. The system works through inertia and is based on computer calculations, which often show absurd chance results, finally they take our foundations away and we find ourselves in the abyss.

L’homme qui marche, or Not, is a replica of the original, wrapped in crocheted cassette tape.

In the opinion of art historians, L’homme qui marche is one of the most important works by Giacometti. It is one of the most important works of 20th century Swiss art. With this work Giacometti turned to naturalism once more, which in 1935 eventually led to his expulsion from the Parisian Surrealists.
